Although low recruitment in psychiatry has been discussed in a number of studies, the issue has not been examined in a systematic manner specifically for the UK context. We conducted a systematic literature review using four databases: Medline, EMBASE CINAHL and PsycINFO. The searches were based on keywords related to psychiatry, medical students/trainees, doctors and attitude.

The results showed that negative attitudes and stigma toward psychiatry were major barriers to recruitment in the field. The results suggest that training and teaching in psychiatry must be improved and reviewed to draw medical students and trainees to the field. Specific enrichment activities such as research experience in psychiatry clubs for university psychiatry and summer schools, psychiatry electives and special study modules could be effective in changing the perceptions of students about the specialty and improve the recruitment of new patients.

The field of psychiatry is an integral element of the healthcare system, regardless of the stigma and negative perceptions towards it. Its contribution to society is invaluable in that it provides care to the most vulnerable members of society. It is difficult to attract trainees and students to this area due to the perception that there is a deficiency of scientific foundation and the work isn't sufficient clinically-oriented.

To determine the factors that influence the recruitment to psychiatry, we conducted an exhaustive review of the literature. We looked through Medline, EMBASE CINAHL, PsycINFO and EMBASE electronic databases for relevant articles that were published from 1974 and onwards. We included studies that examined the reasons for choosing psychiatry as a profession and psychiatric education, enrichment activities and satisfaction with work in psychiatry. However, we excluded studies that focused on comparisons to other specialties or those that gathered data from surveys. Future research should concentrate primarily on improving positive aspects of psychiatry such as its family-friendly reputation and role models. It should also seek to address the negative attitudes and stigmas that deter medical students and trainees from pursuing this specialty.
